REN co-founders Antony Buck and Rob Calcraft. It's not every day you come across beauty moguls with a wild sense of humor, but Robert Calcraft and Antony Buck, of the refreshingly natural skin-care line REN, are just that.

"[Calcraft and I] first met as teenagers, in the days of Wham! and the New Romantics, the era of guyliner, MC Hammer trousers, and big hair," Buck says. He is kidding. The beauty pioneers actually met while working in London and got along so well they ended up starting a brand-consultancy business together. "That was 15 years ago. We have worked together ever since. Despite this, we remain friends." (That's a joke, too.)

REN was born when Buck's wife, Jane, became pregnant in 1998 and started having negative reactions to virtually every skin-care product she tried. She was very distressed. "Over the next few months, she discovered that she could solve her problems if she avoided synthetic ingredients by using natural skin-care products," Buck explains. But the products she found were a bust: "Sticky and smelly, and didn't really do anything," he recalls. That's when Buck and Calcraft decided to try their hands at producing their own skin-care products.

If the prospect of going from marketing brands to creating one sounds tough, it is. "We spent about a year finding a cosmetic chemist who was prepared to help us, and then a further two years with her learning how to make skin care in a completely new way," Buck says. "The really hard bit is finding ways to make bases - the stuff you add the active ingredients to - that don't use synthetic 'nasties,' yet feel lovely, smell amazing, and are absorbed easily by the skin."

REN Skincare was founded in 2000 and has fast become a market leader in the high tech cosmetics industry. The reason for this overwhelming success is their endless enthusiasm to explore innovative ways to put their findings in to practice, by using bio- active and mineral technology. By doing this they have produced skincare products that unlock the skin's natural properties of regeneration, defense and revival.

They could not have achieved this without utilizing scientific techniques to produce these products, which ultimately assist you in obtaining and retaining fresh vibrant looking skin.

The brand name REN came from the Swedish language, which translates as 'Clean' in English and strangely enough REN means 'Honorable Endeavour' in Chinese so REN Skincare is a very appropriate name for the range.
